Purpose of the Job 

 

Maintains mechanical performance for all plant equipment—including performing repairs, installations, operational inspections and participating in developing improvements.

 

Duties & Responsibilities 

 

• Performs repair-oriented activities on a daily basis, based upon immediate needs and maintenance scheduling.

• Performs various types of welding, burning, fabrication and repairs and improvements to equipment throughout the plant.

• Conducts preventive maintenance checks on all equipment.

• Performs mechanical repairs on all the process equipment and auxiliary equipment throughout the plant.

• Performs minor electrical repairs as needed.

• May perform minor carpentry work.

• Operates mobile equipment as required to perform maintenance work.

• Reports any problems or safety issues to appropriate personnel.

• May take a lead role in maintenance projects or oversee contract work.

 

Job Requirements 

 

  • Performs activities based on priority, criticality, machine availability, and available funding. Although some of the aspects of work may be defined, parts may be variable. Participates in problem solving activities related to improving the production process and work environment.
  • Two years related training from college or vocational school; and/or one to two years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, mechanical blueprints, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to present information to small groups.
  • Work requires resolving mutual problems and collaborating with others.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute and/or understand rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and/or interpret graphs. Ability to calculate figures, amounts, lengths, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply and/or understand concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems using available tools, resources, etc. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and/or fingers to handle or feel, reach above shoulder height, stoop, kneel, crouch or squat, twist, crawl, drive (forklifts, loaders, or other vehicles), and climb ladders. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is also required several times each week to climb and/or balance on flights of stairs of more than 25 steps. The employee is required to lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds periodically and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Hearing protection is often required. May be required to wear respiratory protection.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is periodically exposed to working in wet or humid non-weather conditions, working in high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme non-weather cold, extreme non-weather heat, and vibration. The employee is also frequently exposed to working near mechanical and electrical processes, outdoor weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may require hearing protection.
